I was born in Ventura, California, but I mostly lived in Santa Paula, California until about 3 years ago. Ever since I was a newborn, I have always had medical issues, and have spent a lot of time in the hospital. Most of this time spent in the hospital has been when I was a kid. I’ve have also gone to hospital to support or greet new family members and to say good-bye to my grandma.

When I was born I wasn’t able to breathe, until the doctors helped me. Two months later I was put on antibiotics, for bronchitis, at least once a month due to my asthma. When I was eight-months-old my mom noticed that I had diarrhea 4 to 5 times a day. So she took me to the doctor and the doctor said to come back in two weeks if it continued. Two weeks went by and my diarrhea got worse. The doctor then ran some test on my poop and found blood. They referred me to a GI specialist who gave me different medicines until they found the right one. The medicine helped keep me somewhat stable. However I still was using the bathroom more than a normal person would. It wasn’t till the end of seventh grade where I didn’t have to go that often.

Even after that I still have more history in the hospital, like the birth of my brother and sister. My sister was born with a cleft lip/palate. Cleft lip/palate can be fixed; it just takes a lot of surgeries and doctor appointments. My aunt was also born with a cleft lip/palate and she still has surgeries to this day. All those surgeries and appointments will pay off and at the end they will have made people, like my sister, have a somewhat normal life.

These experiences of how people help heal others every day have inspired me to become involved in the medical field. When I go into a hospital I see people in need or receiving help. I also want to get involved in helping people, because things that would be impossible to recover from years ago, now we are able to recover from. Like my sister, doctors helped close and fix her lip/palate. They helped her live a normal and easy life. For this I am grateful and inspired.
