Siblings are one of the most annoying things life throws at you. But they also can be one of the best things. They show you how to throw a football or they show you how to ride a bike .They help you get through some of your hardest moments. They also can be great mentors when it comes to mistakes. My mentor was my older brother. He was only my half-brother, but that never got in the way of us bonding closer than ever.
As I grew older going through different phases in my life, figuring out what kind of person I want to be, my brother stayed by my side through it all. When I was in 6th grade my friend and I were staying the night at my house playing videogames. My brother was the coach of our soccer team so we all were very close. He just arrived home from work and we ran into his bedroom and sat on the edge of his bed. We would watch him play videogames and he did not mind it at all. Hours on end we would laugh until our sides hurt. He would say to his opponents that he knew their moms and the player’s moms would not stop texting him. I looked up to him like a little kid does to his favorite super hero.
I nearly died when my brother went off to Korea to serve for the air force. For the couple years he was gone I was sad and devastated. All I could think was “I miss my brother “. But the example he set for me by going to serve for his country was a great thing to do. To me he was the bravest person on earth and that is why he was my role model. When he returned I had changed as a human being. Those few years I had matured and learned to think for myself. Those years helped me become a better person and the one I am today.
As I began to notice my brother was becoming an adult I knew our childhood activities were over. But those amazing memories we had will last forever. There will be much more activities along the way in the future and I cannot wait to share them with my best friend. There is no way I could ever repay him for everything he did for me. He was coach when I needed coaching. He was a friend when I needed a friend. Most importantly, he was a brother when I needed a brother.
Today my brother is 25 and I am 15. This 10 year gap between us never even slipped into our heads. We were and still are best friends. We both are aging into wiser people and learning different things. But, what truly matters is that we do it together. The world changed around us, but our bond never changed.
